Mr Haider Jan

I visited Mr Haider Jan with the explicit desire to have a bilateral salpingectomy - permanent sterilisation by removal of fallopian tubes. I was able to get an appointment within the week of GP referral, and book my procedure (then and there) for the earliest possible convenient date for me, two weeks later. The operation was explained fully to me, and I had ample chance to ask any questions. Mr Jan treated my request with the utmost understanding and respect, and didn't make me plead with him - many women my age choose the reversible technique, or are turned down completely for NHS treatment on the basis of age. He explained my options clearly, but was happy to trust that I'd done my research, knew my own mind, and would follow my lead. He allowed me to finally feel in control of my own body. My initial scan (internal) was reasonably uncomfortable, physically, but Mr Jan put me at ease, and treated me with dignity and respect. He has a very calming and pleasant 'bedside manner'. He was also available by telephone to advise A&E after I was taken in two days before my operation. When I arrived at Ashtead Hospital, I saw my consultant before the procedure, and was again put at ease by his relaxed and calm confidence - as was my husband! Mr Jan came to see me that evening, exactly when he'd promised, and then again the following day. He also allowed me to stay a further night as physically I didn't feel well enough to leave the hospital, and was on hand to prescribe the right pain medication to ensure I was comfortable. He is an extremely nice man, and seems to go out of his way to reassure and make you feel comfortable and happy. Mr Jan also videoed my surgery, at my request, as I have an interest in surgery, and at my six week check up talked me through it - he is a very talented doctor and surgeon, and I felt completely safe in his hands.
